The Case of the Caveman

Wowzas – did January last forever or was that just me.  Haa!  So many amazing things have happened since my last post that it seems hard not to combine all the sharing into one huge post.  Don’t worry, I’ll spare you and get closer to that ‘blog every 2 weeks’ resolution I made. 😉

News flash – this post is about my recent weeks with weight loss – BONUS - I am not sharing anything you should buy!  Please remain calm…I know…crazy right?!  Haa!  Goodness, it is everywhere these days.  Okay, moving on.

I have successfully lost a pound a week.  YAY!  You know what finally worked?  Knowing my flippin’ body type and looking at my macros (percentage of Fat, Protein, and Carb intake).  It was not super fun learning what foods I should eat and what I should not eat, and then figuring out how much of in each category…January was rough.  BUT – it got easier because now I have more of an understanding of what is a healthy fat, what is protein, and what is a healthy carb.  Meal planning is now a bestie of mine.

Body Type

Turns out I am an Endomorph.  This surprises a lot of people because this body type retains/stores fat, is usually plumper/round – and I am a petite thing.  The reality is - it is harder for me to lose weight because if I am not eating a certain way, then my body reacts like a caveman and stores up for winter.  I have struggled MY WHOLE LIFE with my legs.  They confuse so many people who I consider very knowledgeable about fitness.  You could even argue that I am only an endomorph from the hips down – but you need to treat your whole body this way.

Activity

I have also exercised at least 4 out of 7 days, and I have been loving these Pilates / Barre workouts (30 mins).  They are hilariously difficult for me, but strangely in a good way that I am really enjoying them.  I also have random HIIT workouts (10-15 mins) that are mostly leg driven – but my husband thinks it's funny to throw arms in and 60 pushups later I can’t hold a phone to my face and want to put everyone on a speaker (true story).

Food

My macros are 50%-40% healthy fats, 30%-40% proteins, and 20% healthy carbs.  This was really hard for me.  Having healthy fats as your main food group looks REAL funny for this southern raised lady.  My healthy fats are nuts, seeds, avocados, Greek yogurt, certain cheeses, eggs, olive oil, etc.  Can you imagine how my plates look?  I’d like a scoop of seeds, a side of fish, and half a cup of broccoli, please.  The good news is that there are a lot of proteins that I eat that are also good fats so that evens it out a bit.  I eat a lot of seafood. Cod has been my favorite.  I wasn’t getting enough fiber, so that took a while to get right.  You have got to eat things that are high in fiber and still in the correct category.  So chia seeds were like a light bulb, and BOOM– bloating was way down and the flow was smooth – sorry if TMI, but you have to get this right.  My carbs are my vegetables, which I use to fill my plate with but now I am just normal portioning it and am seeing the difference.  Broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, green peppers – mainly dark green veggies.  I do have Ezekiel bread once a week or so.  I usually save this for the afternoon after my Wednesday Weigh-in & Measure.

What do my meals actually look like – I’ll let you know – your welcome.

Breakfast – ½ cup Plain Greek Yogurt w/ 2 tablespoons of chia seeds mixed in and some cinnamon with about 10 blueberries on top, and ¼ cup unsalted raw almonds.

Lunch – this varies on leftovers.  1/3 cup veggies, chicken or fish (sometimes both), and cheese/avocado slices usually. If it’s cooked it’s in olive oil and seasoned well.

Dinner – same as lunch, big surprise haa! Usually a glass of red wine.

My ‘treats’ are 85% dark chocolate.  I get this kind from Aldi’s and oooooooo it is my jam.  I drink my coffee without milk/cream now and some stevia.  I have also upped my tea game, and herbal tea now has a special place in my heart.

Weight Loss

I will also admit that losing a pound a week is the healthiest but hardest part.  I want to see results NOW, but they come in stages.  I have consistently lost a pound a week since January 1, and I have to mentally realize that this is the way to go.  It is gonna take time, I cannot rush it.  I must continue to make good decisions daily.   I’m proud of myself, but at the same time it’s only been 5 weeks, so only 5 pounds, and I feel like I’ve been doing this FORRREEEVVVVEEEERRRR.  But – in 5 more weeks it will be 10 pounds…so, the toughest part is just rackin’ up those weeks.

...

Another hard thing is making sure I eat the right number of calories.  My body acting like a caveman tends to store up in case of starvation setting in.  So, I can’t cut calories to a crazy extent.  This is hard for a recovering anorexic.  When I was younger, I did just that – lower my calories to a stupid low.  No wonder I have had a problem with my legs – they are storing ALL the fat from years & years of winter!  Not to mention I never actually worked them…at all…my whole life.

The last thing – meal planning really has made my life a lot easier.  You see – my amazingly handsome husband is the EXACT opposite of me.  He is 50% healthy carbs, 30% protein, and 20% healthy fats!  So we usually make dishes for ourselves that I know I will only get a tiny portion of and he will get a huge portion of.  Like beans, couscous, whole grain stuff, veggies, fruits…etc.  Then you throw in a semi-picky toddler in and it’s chaos without planning.

YAY for seeing success!  Hope this was fun and helpful!

Another Brand of Happiness

I do not remember a time when I was not a dreamer.  From my earliest memory, everything I saw had life and noises were full of wonder and mystery.  I was a weird child.  Luckily enough I did have amazing friends that tolerated my strange obsession with fantasy-thinking and loved me for who I was. (Thank you Krystle, Jenny G, Glo, Jenny B, Ashlee, and Kae)

Good thing about weird children is that they grow up to be eccentric adults.  Truth be told, we are just really fun people...you know we are. 😂  There was a magic all around me, and I can still feel it today.  A feeling that starts in your chest and moves outward...it's a calm excitement that has phantom tingles as it travels.  I believe the words that have been circulating around recently are..."spark joy".

In my earlier post about our Minimalism transition, I talked about this a little bit.  You can read about it here.  I want to talk about what happens when all you wear, everyday, are things that create this feeling of joy.  An amazing thing happens...

You feel it.

It is another brand of happiness (a more expensive and well made version), and it shares space with confidence.  I believe this happens because you are connecting to artistic reflections of yourself, granted you've got to do a bit of soul searching at the beginning (hardest but most rewarding part).  There is more to this than just connecting to a article of clothing, its the creativity that helped design it, the skills that made it...a creative-designed-skill that connects you to its Beauty.  It's the same force that keeps us silent starting into each sunrise and sunset.  It's the same pull that draws us to stillness on each beach crashing with gentle waves.  I believe with everything that I am, this is an attribute of God that we are uniting to.  It's something that He wants us to remember about Him.  Like a thank you note that was sent to us, or a sign that leads us back to Himself.

With that said...imagine your life putting on something that genuinely sparks joy for you...everyday.  Think about how your days would start and end differently knowing that you would carry this feeling about you...All Day.  Realize that big things would happen from one small act.  That is why creating an environment around you that carries these 'joy-messages' to you actually changes your life because it transcends created things to the One that Created Everything.  💓

Now, enough of this deep speech.  I LOVE THIS SWEATER!  PomPoms spark joy for me, so do natural colors, and the color white.  Leather and blue jeans will always be a staple in my wardrobe.  Also, something you might not notice is that I do not own a top that has a sharp collar on it.  Those bring me the opposite of joy. 😂  I don't know why, I've never liked them. To be fair, I have cut the collar off of this shirt...like I have on all of my sharp collared shirts.  I make them all mandarin collars.  True story.  Peter Pan collars are fine with me, I just don't own any.

Like I said...Eccentric.  😏

So...what are you waiting for?  Maybe take some time to go through your closet or home and evaluate the items that connect you to something/Someone much greater.  💗

Separating Self from Stuff

My husband and I were recently having a long in-depth conversation about life (which I love talking to him 😍 in such ways), and I was asked… "who do you want to be”.  I knew I had more issues when all that came to mind were things I felt I wanted, or maybe what I wanted to look like. I had a mental social media feed of everyone else and what they have. That's a problem.

Being the processor I am, it took a couple of days for me to come up with something real and tangible.

Then when I wrote down what that looked like, I realized that I didn’t have one-single-physical look, but that these qualities would mirror my style, they would reflect on what I gravitated toward, but they were not a single item or look.  I felt more freed from this exercise, and more able to make style choices knowing these were what I wanted, this is what I wanted to imitate.

  • Lead by Jesus/Submitted to God
  • Natural/Real/Honest/Meek
  • Kind/Encouraging/Happy/Loving
  • Emotional/Artistic/Deep/Creative
  • Wise/Discerning/Understanding/Relatable/Helpful
  • Beautiful/Comfortable/Confident
  • Warm/Full of Light & Life/Reflect Creation/Wild

When I looked at my closet, makeup, bedding, decor, books, and such…it now made since and each piece fit closer to me than it had before.  Style comes from Self…self should not come from your style.  Maybe take time to write down who you want to be, then look at what you love and see how it all makes sense…think about donating the things that do not belong or that don’t make you happy.

I start to lose myself when I focus on style, clothes, makeup, ‘things’, and not start with self.   It looks like this… I am scrolling social media and I see a person or company that captures my attention and appears to have so much going for them, and in such a beautifully documented way!  I attach their style to who I want to be because of the beauty they have displayed.  I start yearning for their beauty-life for myself, instead of seeing the beauty they have reflected, admiring it, and be inspired by it instead of wanting to become it.  Don’t be afraid to produce your own personal beauty through being inspired by someone else’s.  Take courage, work hard, and create your own Beauty through the stimulation of your social media feed.  Can you image how much greater our feed will become if we take in the beauty that we see and create our own personal version?

New Kind of Valentine's Day

I thought of something while driving today.  My very wise, beautiful, hilarious, fun, and successful friend recently posted  her & her husbands’ thoughts about Valentine's Day.  She said “If your significant other is nice to you each day and treats you right on a daily basis, you shouldn't need a box of chocolates or a forced gift to make you feel special once a year. So if you don't get a card...diamond necklace....or over-sized stuffed animal tomorrow, don't feel like you aren't loved.”

Their business is amazing btw (this is not an affiliated ad or anything like that)…you should check it out and follow them: Spruce Homes

That got me thinking (because I love Valentines Day) what is a the best way to show love on Valentine's Day?

Commitment…that is a better way to show love.
Daily ins and outs of selflessness…that is a better way to show love.
Doing something that your partner likes (even if you don’t) everyday…that is a better way to show love.

So, I decided each year I’m going to make a new commitment to Austin.  Something small, something attainable, something that will truly make him happy and make him know that I love him every day…not just on Valentine's Day.

I can easily write, so a post on social media that has me gushing on and on tells my husband I can write well sometimes.  😂  Action that goes with these words is something he can stand on, something he can remember, something he can treasure.

Don't get me wrong, we still gave gifts...kinda-sorta.   When we were grocery shopping last night at Aldi's, I received my favorite 85% Cocoa Dark Chocolate Bars and he received his favorite Carmel Coconut Fudge Cookies. 🍫🍪💕  I wanted to share some older pictures (2011-2016) that I keep on my phone because I seriously love them! Our love story is so amazing, and these pictures just help me remember it.

When Mondays Suck

When Mondays Suck – God May Send a Spring Snow

I was praying about what to write this morning.  Last night we got snow, I don’t know 2-3 inches maybe…btw it’s April.  I jumped back on the scale this morning and realized that the pounds I lost I had gained back, plus a couple more.  I was 15 mins late to work this morning because it took me over an hour to get ready (Austin already took Ryne to the sitter’s during that time, so it was just me).  Trust me when I said, I could go on…but I really don’t want to.

On my way to work, I realized that this springtime snow was the most beautiful snow we have had all season.  It stuck to each budding tree limb and flowering bush.  The green new grass barely poking through the billowing soft white.  It was truly a beautiful sight…and God gave me an opportunity to start again.

Spring is about renewal, and for me, it’s a time to re-start whatever in my life I have let go into chaos.  Like my time management, health, and any good goal I tried setting for myself. Haa!  This spring snow felt like Jesus was telling me…it’s still winter, you’ve got another chance to start your spring again.  So, I am taking it, and running with it.

My Monday Mindset turned from anger, frustration, and beating myself up to peace, joy, excitement, and giving myself grace along with a healthy dose of thank you Jesus “let's do this!”.

What is your current Spring Snow?  Let me tell you a secret…it's beautiful, and it was sent to you for a specific reason.  Your first task is to be open to see the beauty, accept the Hope that Jesus sent to you through it, and live through the Joy that is within it.

Your Monday Mindset could change everything <3
